Interview with Producer of Philology Theatre Indonesian University


Q: Could you explain little bit about history of Philology Theatre Indonesian University?

 

      A: Philology Theatre Indonesian University was born in 1984 where the collage its not  move to the Depok district, still in the Rawamangun. This theatre its been found by me Yudhi Soenarto, in that time I was a college student in the marger of english letter. For the first we used the public room around the collage for exercise, and the excel drama for presented its a “Paus” created by Eugene O’Neill in april’1985; since that philology theatre brought a learning system in each exercise its to intend the exercise its not just fill satisfication for show stage but came to bowl for learn with not border by gesture, genre, tradition or not tradition, realism and absurd,eksperimental or not.And this theatre its not just for college student with various merger, but lecturer, employee, graduated, could be participant in. The theatre becomes oldest in around college and most experience,with twenty years more philology theatre was purpose to student for learn. Constitution employee, businessman, lecturer, researcher, staring film, rising success in this theatre.

 

Q: So how about your career, your background , the performing art from theatre and obstacle confront from this theatre?

 

A: I got a fulbright scholarship from American state for deeper learned performing art, and take success magister in purity performing art from State University of New York. In American I becomes lecturer for my marger beside learned performing art with performance studies consentration in New York University. While in American I follow several casting with tight audition, my rival its actors from American theatre, its was surprise when for the first audition Im success got it first actor becomes Leonardo in project production Bloodwedding ( producer by John Lutterbie ) in stage Off-Broadway, NY. Becomes an actor I ever played “Estragon” in Waiting for Godot ( producer by Amy Sullivan ), show in eksperimental  Slow Emotion ( producer by Richard Schener ) and played becomes Yoga in performing art by his own squel with English subtitle, The Tiger Line, and show it in the Staller Center for the Art, New York. My career becomes an actor more open widely but I choosen comeback to homeland and spread my knowledge in Indonesian theater. We confront a lot obstacle for sure bulit this theatre, not just your encourage work hard for fill but not enough finance. In hard situation we still moved and present own squel like Tiang Gantungan ( Yudhi Soenarto 1985 ), Sosok- Sosok ( Yudhi Soenarto 1988 ), Rumah Pinggiran ( Sam Shepard 1991 ) and famous literary squel from Shakespeare Othello Tragedy ( 1988 ). Second era, since 1989, philology theatre was present their little show like Prokossokampres ( 1989 ), Ambhrosoerokihl ( 1990 ),  jgerr!!! ( 1983 ) and Jamprass ( 1994 ). The third era philology theatre its presented Orang Baik Dari Setzuan ( Bertolt  Brench ) in 1998, 1999, Guci Yang Pecah ( Heinrich von Kleist ) in 2000, 2001, and 2002, this era brought the theatre more famous. In 2009 the theatre was present the famous literary again Macbeth tragedy from Shakespeare and Robot sketch. My daily activities, becomes lecturer in Indonesian University performing art subject, lecturer in  Art Institution in Jakarta ( 1999-2009 ), built and become first leading for Art and Culture laboratorium Indonesian University ( 1999 – 2003 ).


Q: How about the plan furthermore or performing art newest?

 

A: For now we just exercise each Friday and Monday evening. The newest performingf art  its “An Enemy of Them People” we show it in Graha Bhakti Budaya, Taman Ismail Marzuki 23-25 past.“An Enemy of the People” by Henrik Ibsen its another one famous literary in the world, that is not just writen with another one realism genre figure in drama but sure the value from literary its contain out. This drama its talk about the revelant problem until now, it is struggle from another one figure for said the factual true where is not suitable from people sure and contrast with people want to. Ibsen gave and try human as a figure whose brought some changes. People just been quite and let the placeman with their deviant behaviour.This act its been a center target in “An Enemy of The People”. Im tried to combain this Ibsen literary with Indonesian content.

 

Q: Its concern your opinion about theatre, why the people in this country its not much excited from?

 

A: Im enough recognize about that, its just source from different view of people seeing. If you in to some theatre and came that for your work, its good, the work its must be you enjoy in there with satisfied your soul. You must be totally like it, Indonesian its not like American or Europe where is the theatre more progress; the reason for me to spread my ability and this country beside the theatre its a facilitate the activities of student art, to create, to shape ideas and creativity, we accommodate and channel as well as provide opportunities for members to demonstrate the and express themselves. Opportunities for members to demonstrate their existence in the academic arena and the public, improve creativity, ingenuity and art.

 

Q: The performing art its lift some issue about political, what the another issue the theatre rises in drama?

 

A: “University Robot of Indonesian” or “Robot sketch”its an another one success performing art from we, the education issue background we stair. Education for free its impossible for create, we must paid high for come in university; and the education its just like expensive packet and the price from each its different depands we chosen like for. We show their with humor but offend the parlement education of some. Its result a human resources with terrible skill because their thought was fluent toxic like money force, individualism, and the basic norm of human its really gone.Its also talk about robot with human point, and their its not just done the human task besides their set with human habbit.

 

Q: From the Shakespeare literary your lift Macbeth Tragedy, the scenario its just like origin or your mix with yours?

 

A: We just take their story from the plot. The story its made ​​by three witches to Macbeth, their said Macbeth would be king,when the king's messenger came to tell Duncan that Macbeth, the Commander of Glamis, was awarded the title of Commander of Cawdor for his services to the country, he began to believe in the truth of the prophecy. Ambition began to burn his heart and mind. But king is still alive, and the crown prince has been prepared. The new king will not be around for a long time the king is still there. With the urging of his wife, Macbeth had killed the king. And in order to secure the throne already occupied, a series of murders had to be done. The heroes turned into villains. Power taken by force must be maintained by violence. Various crimes must be done in order to cover up the first crime. The victim had fallen and created chaos. But in finally Macbeth was feel guilty and his soul rebel where’s make his comeback to the true way.

 

Q: Become drama lecturer in this university, what your explaination for drama subject, sure your students knew also interest for?

 

A: Im enough relax in teach my students, because drama its need your appreciation not much for seriously. Drama is a reflection of real life. The drama also shows how people interact or communicate using language expressions; questions, explanations, statements, by the actor. Teaching English through drama can only be given to students post-intermediate and advance. Both categories of students are expected to have a hold level so that they can understand the language and culture of a foreign people. This activity is designed for students more concrete particular language courses and English literature. Forms of drama is different from the traditional form of drama that focuses only on the intrinsic elements of drama. The drama subject its given in 5’semester with syllabus should be designed and based on competence rather than on mastering communication aspects intrinsic drama, and presentation time should be sufficient so as to interact with the practice of using verbal language can run properly.Im using a communicative approach, not grammar translation approach, the direct method, approach reading, or a cognitive approach, become facilitators so as to facilitate students who are having difficulty and solve the problem.  Im created the drama like something interesting and fun, so my each student can do something that is best done as it can enjoy. Teaching materials can be from literary works that have been created by the authors during the 16th century and into the 17th or later. Play written by British and American authors can as teaching materials (like Waiting for Godot (Samuel Beckett), Desire under the Elms (Eugene O'Neill) and legendary writer William Shakespeare once highly productive with his works such as Romeo and Juliet , Julius Ceasar, Machbet, Hamlet, and much more).Im ask to students for expected read the text of the drama so that they understand the overall content of the literary work. And in the clas we discuss about issues relating to the characters (characters), plot (plot), place or situation (setting) and other aspects of the play.

 

Q: The award from performing art?

 
A: The drama we have performing its was 322 roll action ( the last its “An The Enemy of the people ),``Sosok-sosok”,``Guci yang pecah”,``Perempuan pilihan dewa”, “Baju baru sang raja” , “Sketsa Robot”, “Sepeda mini hadiah”,``Sayang aku Hiv kamu ngapain aja”its a story about relationship life style in this era, and we can learn about their. That is the several performing art have it award but we have a lot for win.

 

Q: The philology theatre its have activity beside performing art, what’s that activity?


A: Sure we have.. As a form of organization in general Student Activities Unit - Campus this theatre also have the structure set out in annual meeting while the structure is:
-Organization's highest decision-making is annual meeting
-The implementation of the board's decision is managed head of theatre
In addition to the second point, the philology theatre organizational structure, have there are three areas, is:
-Field of regeneration and Quality Resources
-Sector Assets and Household
-Internal and External Relations


Q: How about your official partnership in the performing art event?and found you got from?


A: Im so gratefull to god if each performing art we have a lot official partnership, like TVRI, detik com, suave, far magazine, seputar kampus.com, wardah,etc. The financial departement its also help for show.
